Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: Picturesque Little Lanes, Ancient Ruins, Southern Sunlight, and the Scent of Lavender. Yet an Abyss Lurks Behind the Idyll.

It’s June in Provence and summertime sees tourists flocking to the region – and that includes Saint-Rémy, one of the most beautiful places in Southern France. Just beyond the picturesque little town lie the Alpilles, a mountain range of rugged, rocky peaks and thickly forested valleys, almost devoid of people. And located slap-bang between the town and the mountains, halfway between the hustle and bustle and the solitude of the wilderness, sits the abandoned ancient metropolis of Glanum, the Pompeii of Provence, over one-and-a-half thousand years old. A young archaeologist from the Sorbonne is working among the ruins where he, his boss, and a colleague plan to spend a few weeks carrying out an excavation. So far, so normal – until, that is, the archaeologist is found murdered one night in a gloomy well shaft, a site believed by the Celts, the Greeks, and the Romans, to be a holy place. Blanc and his colleagues Marius Tonon and Fabienne Souillard, both weighed down by problems in their personal lives, take on the investigation and soon discover that the dead man was carrying out much more than just official research. He was searching for something in secret, and it may have cost him his life.
