A wolf pack roams a ghost town in the middle of Provence. The 7th case for Capitaine Roger Blanc

It’s the beginning of January in Provence. Snow is falling, quiet days for the police. Crime itself seems to be frozen in the cold. But in the middle of the night, Capitaine Blanc and Lieutenant Tonon are called to a mysterious case. The location is Vieux Vernègues, a mediaeval town on a hill that could be a picturesque idyll if it hadn’t been destroyed by an earthquake about a hundred years ago. Vieux Vernègues is a ghost town now, a desolate collection of ruins in the shadow of the gloomy remnants of its castle. Two old shepherds raised the alarm. Twelve of their flock were killed within less than an hour – and by wolves.
Talk of the wolf pack roaming the area spreads quickly throughout the region. These animals are in fact protected by very strict wildlife regulations. But fear soon runs rampant. Shepherds, hunters and even the mayor himself take up their weapons and no longer bother with the law. Blanc and his colleagues soon realise that other bizarre creatures are wandering the woods at night. An explosive situation that could quickly get out of control. And indeed, only a few days later, a human is found dead among the ruins …
