Shahira is breaking the rules of the Kurdish community several times: she is a single mother, doesn’t bother about other people’s gazes which her permissiveness attracts, and she doesn’t live monogamous.
For Amal and Raffiq, her son’s friends, she is both fascinating and provocative. They admire Shahira’s life style but at the same time they look down on her for seemingly putting her own needs above the needs of her son. Her otherness confronts the teenagers again and again with their own wishes, desires, prejudices and also their decisions. And so it changes their lives forever.
Im Bauch der Königin combines alternative stories Amal and Raffiq each narrate individually in the form of a “turnaround”- book. Each story has its own rules, develops the characters in different directions and shows that there is more than one truth. And yet there are overlaps, and the characters, themes, issues and perspectives mirror each other. Realities shift around.
Karosh Taha’s outstanding ability as a storyteller unifies both parts of the book, and so does her powerful and sensual language and her directness, her wit and insightfulness. This is an outstanding book by an outstanding, talented author.

Karosh Taha was born in 1987 in the small town of Zaxo in Northern Iraq. She has lived in the German Ruhr region since 1997, studying English literature and history in Duisburg-Essen as well as in Kansas, US. Her debut novel ‘Beschreibung einer Krabbenwanderung’ was published by DuMont in 2018. The author received the Emerging Artist Prize of North Rhine Westphalia, a scholarship from the LCB and the Heinrich Heine Prize, the Literature Prize of Hohenems, a scholarship from the German Literary...
